Understanding Chronic Back Pain & How To Heal
- Over 80% of adults will experience significant back pain at some point.
- Approximately 1.2 million spinal surgeries/year in the US.
- The US prescription pain market is $81 Billion/year.
- The US over the counter pain market is 27.12 Billion/year.
- Missed work, poor sleep, reduced quality of, life lowered experience of wellbeing are common results.
- Despite investment & support from mainstream, treatments remain largely ineffective.

This study showed people with severe postural degeneration (hyperkyphosis) had a higher all cause mortality than those with excellent posture.
Posture (and ultimately living with a pain free and fully functional spine) appears to be incredibly important for quality of life.
Additionally, most back issues are DEGENERATIVE.
Degeneration means there is a breakdown of the structure and function over time and the breakdown continues to worsen the longer the
problem continues.

The spine is made of bones which called vertebrae.
Between the bones are discs. These discs are made of 85% water and act as shock absorbers and allow the spine to maintain mobility and flexibility.
Muscles and connective tissues move the spine and support its structure.
Finally, the spine houses the central nervous system. The central nervous system is the master control system for every single function in the body. In between each bone, nerve roots exit the spinal cord to
serve every organ, muscle, and tissue in the body.
As the spine loses correct structure, correct mobility, correct spacing, and correct flexibility these are all forms of degeneration. When the spine degenerates, it puts excessive pressure on discs which can be injured, excessive stress on the muscles and connective tissues, ultimately pinching and impinging the nerve roots which exit the spine.
Pain is the “check engine” light telling us to fix the problem.
Whether pain was originally caused by an injury or from long term habitual patterns, it's important to remember a healthy spine can heal!
When you solve the root causes which are PREVENTING the healing process from occurring, the spine (and the rest of the body) is able to heal naturally.
There is always some type of degeneration of the healthy function or form of the spine when back pain is present.
There are five main degenerative conditions all of which put unnatural
pressure on discs and nerve roots
Which one are you experiencing?
A healthy spine has a natural curvature as well as flexibility and mobility. Whether from an injury or lifestyle the joints can become misaligned and “stuck.” When natural movement becomes restricted and stiffens, we lose the natural curve which puts unnatural pressure on the discs and the nerves.

This is a severe injury to the discs between the bones in our spine. Typically these occur from acute accidents or falls but also happen due to misalignment dysfunction as mentioned previously. The discs are under so much pressure that they bulge out or even herniate and in so doing, they put extreme pressure on the nerve roots exiting the spine. Even worse, if not correctly healed, the body will “protect” the injury by locking down the movement in the area which causes even more misalignments and decreased mobility.

Spinal Stenosis most often occurs when long term misalignment and lack of mobility are not addressed and corrected. Defined as narrowing of the spinal canal. A potential cause is improper movement, improper alignment, increased inflammation over an extended period of time, the bones of the spine begin to develop bone spurs which protrude into the nerves causing extreme pain.

Degenerative disc disease is an advanced stage of postural degeneration where the discs have been under so much pressure due to misalignment and lack of mobility that discs have narrowed, bulged, herniated, and bones have developed spurs to the point that posture, disc health, and nerve function in the area are greatly impaired.

Sciatic pain has a distinct feature due to the fact the pain is typically felt as shooting or electric pain which runs down the leg. It can also be felt as an achy feeling in the buttock or between the hip bones. Sciatica is merely a misalignment often combined with a significant narrowing of the disc in the lowest vertebrae into the sacrum. Large nerve roots exit the spine through the sacrum (tailbone) and lower vertebrae. These nerve roots serve the legs and lower body which is why this pain is often felt shooting down the leg.

Mainstream treatments do little to nothing to correct the underlying degenerative issues causing the pain which leads many back injuries or back pain to become chronic and continue to degenerate further.
Good Inflammation vs. Bad
Inflammation
Good inflammation is temporary, serves to repair injuries and disease, flushes out damaged cells, brings healing nutrients and oxygen, and facilitates the bodyʼs healing process.
True healing requires flushing out this bad inflammation and restoring proper circulation. Without this step, even the best exercises or therapies will be of minimal benefit.
Chronic back pain is almost always associated with toxic inflammation —a type that lingers and spreads, blocking circulation and preventing healing. When the body is injured, diseased, or has any type of dysfunction, the body naturally responds by sending an army of white blood cells to repair the dysfunction. However, when the injury or dysfunction isn't able to restore correct mobility, doesnʼt heal correctly, and the pain otherwise becomes chronic, the inflammation ends up blocking the healing process. The cells in those tissues become chronically inflamed and the healing process never advances. These processes contribute to the development of further dysfunction and degeneration.

We brush our teeth every day to prevent cavities. So why don't we do something every day for our spines?
Cavities...the health of your teeth would degenerate!
Most people do nothing to maintain spinal hygiene. Over time the spine loses mobility, stiffens, and discs narrow, and we lose function.
Maintaining spinal health means restoring flexibility, motion, and strength to your spine every single day. It doesnʼt require hours in the gym—it requires the right movement, done consistently for only a few minutes each morning.

Letʼs look at the data again:
- A study of cortisone injection results found that corticosteroid injections showed no long-term benefit for chronic back pain—and in many cases, patients were worse after just three months.
- A published review of surgical results found back surgery successful outcomes to be only slightly above 50% for initial surgeries and as low as 5% for successive surgeries.
- Another review of surgical results for work injuries found that only
26% of patients ever return to work. Thatʼs an astounding 76% failure rate. Additionally, surgery recipients were 40% more likely to develop long term dependency on opiates for pain relief.
Mainstream solutions only deal with symptoms. Treating symptoms
does not address the underlying root causes of back pain.
Without addressing ALL THREE root causes of chronic back pain, the
spine never heals which leads to continued worsening or degeneration.
